Much is made of the difference between the "inner, seeing eye" and the outward-looking eye that must be closed to see. Various religions are compared. A lot of meaningless waffle is waffled. Their examination of mystical poetry is vastly annoying and tedious, and afterwards I still feel that I haven't even read the poems in question, because all they do is exxerpt lines and seemingly take stuff out of the context where it belongs. There's some token psychology stuff, too, and pointers as to how the blind can help themselves and find the resources they need.
Braille is barely discussed, disappointingly Ah well. You know, I suppose this might be eye-opening for someone out there, who really has no idea how a blind person lives and might be panicking because they're on the edge of darkness themselves.

One unfortunate thing I noticed is that there's a lot of assumed privilege and entitlement involved. The authors seem to be writing exclusively for a middle or upper-class uSA readership, and there's much talk of how things used to be really bad decades ago, but that now with all these fancy gizmos and in an era of more enlightened tolerance, we're all a lot better off. As any sensible person can tell you, it takes more than laws and neat gadgets to change peoples' mindsets, and discrimination will never end.
Still, if you can glean a positive message from this here book, and learn something, I suppose it's done some good.
